This week, the UK government that apprentices aged 19 and over are no longer mandated to pass Level 2 English and Maths Functional Skills qualifications to complete their apprenticeship. Instead, employers now have the discretion to determine whether these qualifications are necessary for their adult apprentices.
It’s important to note that these changes apply specifically to apprentices aged 19 and over. Apprentices under the age of 19 are still required to complete the Level 2 English and Maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship program.
This part of a broader strategy to streamline apprenticeship processes and reduce barriers to entry, thereby enhancing workforce readiness in essential sectors. It is expected that up to 10,000 more apprentices will be able to qualify per year.
What does this mean for apprentices?
Existing learners on apprenticeship programmes must continue with their English and maths training until agreed otherwise in a discussion between them and their employer.
Employers are required to inform the training provider whether the learner continues or discontinues studying towards English and maths and (as part of Government compliance) provide a reason if continuing or discontinuing by 1st April 2025.
With Provek, new starters will still be asked to complete an initial assessment before we agree to their suitability for our apprenticeship programme, as part of our screening process to ensure applicants are set up for success. Employers are required to confirm whether English and maths Functional Skills is required for the learner to be able to progress onto the apprenticeship programme.
